Amateur Radio Licensing & Testing
We offer monthly Amateur Radio License testing on all levels. Please see the 2024 Testing Schedule here.
To schedule your test or get further information, or have general questions, contact Gerald Richmond – N5ZXJ, the local ARRL/VEC Liaison.
Test sessions are typically held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at the Temple Fire Station 8, 7268 Airport Rd. in Temple, Texas. Park and enter the building on the west side by the Fire equipment display.
Testing Starts at 10:00am. Sessions are subject to cancellation with very short notice, or the facilities are not available to us on test day.
A few things to do before and/or know when registering for a test:
1. You must register for the test session.
2. If you do not already have an FCC FRN (FCC Registration Number) you must register for one first.
Go here: FCC Registration Login (CORES) , click on REGISTER, and follow the prompts. Bring your FRN number with you to the test session. Your Social Security Number is NO LONGER ALLOWED on any paperwork.
3. You must have a Valid Email Address and Phone number. FCC requirement. *
4. If you have a Felony Conviction, please take the time to review the qualification question on the ARRL website or the FCC website regarding getting licensed. (Your paperwork could be denied and/or delayed by the FCC.)
5. Bring some form of Photo ID: Driver’s License, Military ID, Passport, School ID, etc.
Testing Fee is $15.00.
IMPORTANT: Bring these two forms with you:
1. Fill out Form 605 (interactive PDF), print 2 copies, and bring them with you to the test session. This will create a legible copy for the examiner. Most errors in submitting your paperwork are with illegible hand-written forms.
2. Fill out the Answer Sheet (interactive PDF) with your Candidate Information, print 3 copies, and bring them with you to the test session.
When printing, make sure the Page Size (or Scale) is set to ‘Actual Size’ or ‘100%’ .
DO NOT use ‘Fit to Page’ else the grading overlays will not work, and you will have to re-do your answer sheet!
* Upon completion of a passing exam, and having your paperwork accepted, the FCC will email you with instructions to pay their $35 licensing fee. You have 10 days to pay the fee after you receive the email. Once the fee is paid you will receive another email with a link to your official license. Print/save your license and post it at your station. The FCC no longer mails licenses.
